Closed Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping is the second most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the USA. 255,972 of these operations were performed in the United States last year (statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Sometimes this operation is performed for cosmetic reasons and sometimes because the patient is having trouble breathing through the nose.
Rhinoplasty can be performed both open and closed. Closed rhinoplasty is used most commonly when the tip of the nose is not very large, not very asymmetric and not very droopy. With the closed approach the tip cartilages can be trimmed and the tip will become more refined and elevated. The hump of the nose can be reduced and the nasal bones can be made narrower. Stitches dissolve and are inside the nose only. A splint is worn on the nose for 1-2 weeks.
